Review: Carrie is a merger of two great artist, in this case, Stephen King, who wrote the novel and the Brian DePalma, who directed the film. This time, exciting character study that also exciting sound. It is difficult to make a film that can do both, but DePalma was doing. Usually novel king is treated with telekinetic girl who is treated cruelly by their classmates. DePalma and screenwriter Lawrence Cohen follows the novel quite closely, except for the end, which is much more sensationalistic and better, in my opinion. (Like King of the finale and the film itself, as noted in his excellent study of the horror genre, Danse Macabre) As with most movies DePalma, the technical credits are superb. The cinematography (by Mario OSI) is a highly effective, colors and shadows never shoot more effectively in a film DePalma since. The film score is by Pino Donaggio, and marks the first collaboration between Donaggio and DePalma. (Bernard Herrmann died shortly after completing Obsession) Donaggio among the most underrated composers and ignore his time. His score for Dressed to Kill, Blow Out and Body Double are all exceptional and deserved all the Oscars. Carrie is just as great, as he achieved what all great point is supposed to do: improve the film without giving anything away. Edit Paul Hirsch is also very effective as it was Sisters, Obsession, Blow Out and Raising Cain. But the performances that make Carrie stood out. Carrie played by Sissy Spacek in the performance of power and strength that it received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress (the first actress ever to be nominated for adapted ckfilm, the other would Sigourney Weaver in Aliens) She managed to hit all the right notes. Lesser actress would have rocked toward melodrama. Spacek plays a role in the film more realistic and much more effective that way. (In case you did not know, in DePalma Spacek regularly, but off-screen, he was art director for much of his early). Also noticed Carrie Piper Laurie returned to films after a gap too long (his last credit was the Hustler) Here she plays the mother bear. Again, a minor actress has rocked toward melodrama, but Laurie resist temptation. Its performance is also a real knockout garnet Oscar nomination (he should have won, but the typical Academy genius in and give the price to Beatrice Straight as the network location for a whopping 10 minutes and does not really do much .) Also, as a side note, this film also starts for some regular DePalma in the future as John Travolta (his first major film studio) and Nancy Allen (his first major role there) What I do love about Carrie is the absolute perfect ending. I have said earlier that the Sisters have been absolutely perfect finale. One thing about Brian DePalma is that he knows how to finish a picture. Dressed to Kill are very good, although some people hate and Blow Out. The Fury has ended most of all the excitement DePalma. Note the small end: In 1999, Carrie 2 made by profiteers at MGM. Despite a rich premise, the film is an artistic failure. DePalma was nothing to worry about. Progression (can be retreading better word) without everything that makes DePalma original so good. Rent or buy the original, the band (pan-and-scan or widescreen) and DVD (widescreen) and forget the sequence, even if they are put away. By **** 4 stars
